Elizabeth City State University’s WRVS is located in North Carolina’s Inner Banks. Along with the G.R. Little Library, it was a pilot partner of the project. To date, the project has digitized 59 hours of programming across 39 items gathered in 3 visits. Narrators have recorded 12 oral histories, with most available below.
Chancellor Jimmy R. Jenkins, Sr. and General Manager David C. Linton launched WRVS—“Wonderful Radio Viking Style”—in 1986. That 10,000 watt station has grown to 41,000 watts. Its slogan, “Your Community Voice,” reflects the powerful connection between WRVS and its listeners. Since 2003, the station’s musical offerings have emphasized Adult Urban Contemporary and features regular morning gospel. Community programs supplement NPR news and talk shows at a station that has trained generations of announcers, programmers, engineers, and managers working in public and commercial radio.
