Shaw University, the first HBCU in the South, was founded in 1865 by Rev. Henry Martin Tupper and his wife Sarah Tupper. Shaw University is known for many of its firsts including the first HBCU owned radio station, WSHA. WSHA-FM was established as part of the Shaw University School of Communications and made its first broadcast in November 1968.
